But when you surpass that wall of being afraid, of being vulnerable, you ’ll find there ’s comfort there. Lindsey: Are there ever any moments where you do feel vulnerable in those instances? With acting, you really have to open yourself up and be in tune with your emotions in a way that most people aren’t, it’s your livelihood. It’s easier to carve your own path because people are more understanding – or more empathetic. ![]() Jack: It’s definitely easier to speak your truth, be your real self, choose your destiny and not have a pre-orchestrated future. Lindsey: Yeah, and growing up nowadays we really do have larger platforms to express ourselves, to live out loud and actually be heard compared to past generations. Being someone else is really just me being me in a weird way, it’s who I am, it’s living out loud, which I’ve been doing my whole life. Some people choose to bottle things up, but for me, being on a stage or in front of the camera is freedom. Lindsey: You must feel a certain level of freedom as you disassociate from who you are? I just enjoyed living through these characters. To live in these fantasy worlds has been so cool because when I was growing up, I used to dress up as Captain Hook or Batman and do little scenes in the mirror. I tried doing sports when I was little and it just didn’t work for me and then I started doing theatre and was like, this is my tribe, this is where I belong, this is my niche. It was amazing to watch and I imagine that the influences you have on-set play a large role in your life. Released on September 14th on HBO, the eight-episode miniseries have received a very positive reception from critics who have once again surrendered to Guadagnino’s delicate script, the careful aesthetics and the performances of the cast, led by Grazer. Jack Dylan Grazeris the actor who gives life to Fraser. There he will meet Caitlin Poythress, a rebellious young girl who will introduce him to the small microcosm of the base, where love, friendship and passion are very much present. “We are who we are” tells the story of Fraser Wilson, who at the age of fourteen, moves with his two mothers, to an American military base located in Veneto, north of Italy. This time, in the miniseries “We Are Who We Are”, a group of teenagers are the chosen ones to conduct this coming-of-age adventure. All those movies tell different stories but in each one of them, the protagonist embarks on a journey of self-discovery. ![]() In “I am love”, that emotional journey was developed through an extramarital affair, in “Call me by your name” the channel was a summer romance and in “Suspiria” was magic and witchcraft. Now it is the turn of the acclaimed Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, who accumulates nominations for the Oscars or the Bafta and standing ovations at Cannes and Venice. Steven Soderbergh, the Wachoswkys Sisters, or even Jane Campion have dared to enter to this new paradise for filmmakers and movie stars. The tables have turned and the streaming platforms are the new sheriff in town. In the past, the magic box turned out to be the perfect refuge for actors whose stardom status was beginning to fade and were looking for a great last lead role. executive, who noted that non-native English speakers were able to communicate with a minimal, “utilitarian” vocabulary of English words. The term was coined by Jean-Paul Nerrière, a French former I.B.M. ![]() “Globish” is not quite the same as global English. “Is this revolution a creature of globalization,” he asks, “or does global capitalism owe some of its energy and resilience to global English in all its manifestations, cultural as well as linguistic?” English has also become, as Robert McCrum asserts in “Globish” (Norton $26.95), the “world’s language,” and it is a merit of his book that he is alert to the many dichotomies of English’s rise. It has often been shaped by populations upon whom it was imposed a large number of common English words (“jungle,” “nirvana,” “bungalow”) were, for instance, taken from Indian languages. English has been a language of occupiers and imperialists, but also one of insurgents and democrats. The story of English in India epitomizes its strange history. In 1950, the Indian constitution was ratified it was written in English. What’s more, the generations of independence leaders who emerged in the wake of the rebellion tended to be educated English speakers-from precisely the “class” that Macaulay had sought to create. The rebellion is now regarded by many Indians as the first war of independence. The uprising was ruthlessly put down, but the shock it provoked in London brought about the dissolution of the East India Company and the establishment of the British Raj. Macaulay’s vision of an independent class of Anglophone Indians was being realized.īut this development was not without irony: 1857 was also the year that Indian soldiers rebelled against the East India Company’s century-long rule. Sullivan, “English was the dominant language in Calcutta.” In 1857, English-speaking universities opened in Madras, Bombay, and Calcutta. With Macaulay’s backing, schools instructed Indian students in English, a language that offered “ready access to all the vast intellectual wealth, which all the wisest nations of the earth have created and hoarded in the course of ninety generations,” whereas Sanskrit and Arabic offered only “false taste and false philosophy.” By 1840, according to Macaulay’s biographer Robert E. ![]() We must at present do our best to form a class who may be interpreters between us and the millions whom we govern a class of persons, Indian in blood and colour, but English in taste, in opinions, in morals, and in intellect.” The implication was obvious: Indians must learn the language of their occupiers. “But she can have the next best thing: a firm and impartial despotism.” A few months later, Macaulay wrote a memo on Indian education, which stated, “It is impossible for us, with our limited means, to attempt to educate the body of the people. “We know that India cannot have a free Government,” Macaulay had written to the Scottish philosopher James Mill the year before. He travelled north to Calcutta, then India’s capital, to assume the role of Law Member of the Governor-General’s Council.
